Aussies warned to be on the lookout for scams during holiday sales
With the holiday season fast approaching, Australians are being warned to be on the lookout for scams.
The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) says there has been a spike in reports of scams in recent months, with many targeting people who are shopping online.
The ACCC’s acting chair, Delia Rickard, says scammers are using a variety of methods to trick people, including:
- Sending fake emails or text messages that appear to be from legitimate businesses.
- Creating fake websites that look like real ones.
- Offering too-good-to-be-true deals.
- Asking for personal information, such as credit card numbers or passwords.
Rickard says it is important to be vigilant when shopping online and to be aware of the signs of a scam.
“If you’re not sure whether a website is legitimate, do some research before you make a purchase,” she says.
“And never give your personal information to a website that you don’t trust.”
Here are some tips for avoiding scams:
- Only shop from reputable websites.
- Be wary of emails or text messages that appear to be from legitimate businesses but contain links to unfamiliar websites.
- Never give your personal information to a website that you don’t trust.
- Use a credit card when shopping online, as this will provide you with some protection if you are scammed.
- Report any scams to the ACCC.
By following these tips, you can help protect yourself from scams and enjoy the holiday season.
