Bears OC Thomas Brown Says There Are No Quick Fixes. But Here Are 3 Adjustments He Could Make Right Now
Finding Solutions to the Bears' Offensive Struggles
The Chicago Bears' offense has been one of the most disappointing units in the NFL through the first six weeks of the season. The Bears rank near the bottom of the league in several offensive categories, including points per game (26th), yards per game (31st), and passing yards per game (32nd).
Offensive coordinator Thomas Brown has come under fire for the team's offensive struggles. Brown was hired by the Bears in January after spending the previous four seasons as the Los Angeles Rams' running backs coach.
Brown has acknowledged that the Bears' offense needs to improve, but he has also said that there are no quick fixes.
"There's no magic wand that we can wave and all of a sudden we're going to be a top-10 offense," Brown said. "It's going to take time and it's going to take work."
While there may not be any quick fixes, there are some adjustments that Brown could make to help the Bears' offense improve.
1. Get the ball to Justin Fields more often
Justin Fields was electric in the Bears' season-opening win over the San Francisco 49ers, rushing for 112 yards and a touchdown. But Fields has not been as productive in the passing game, completing just 59.1% of his passes for 903 yards, four touchdowns, and seven interceptions.
Brown needs to find ways to get the ball to Fields more often, especially in the running game. Fields is a threat to score every time he touches the ball, and the Bears need to take advantage of his playmaking ability.
2. Establish a more consistent running game
The Bears' running game has been inconsistent this season, with David Montgomery averaging just 3.8 yards per carry. Brown needs to find a way to establish a more consistent running game to take some of the pressure off of Fields.
One way to do that is to get Montgomery more involved in the passing game. Montgomery is a good receiver out of the backfield, and he can help the Bears move the chains on short-yardage situations.
3. Improve the offensive line play
The Bears' offensive line has been a major disappointment this season. The line has allowed 19 sacks, which is tied for the most in the NFL.
Brown needs to find a way to improve the offensive line play. One way to do that is to get more healthy bodies on the field. The Bears have been dealing with injuries to several of their starting offensive linemen, and that has hurt their performance.
Another way to improve the offensive line play is to get more consistent in their blocking assignments. The Bears' offensive line has been guilty of making too many mistakes this season, and that has led to sacks and negative plays.
