Bridge works due to continue to 2025

£139m project to continue for a further 4 years

Motorists will have to continue to put up with disruption as work on a major bridge project is set to continue to 2025.

The £139m improvements to Cleddau Bridge, near Pembroke in South Wales, which started in 2021 were due to be completed in 2023.

But Transport for Wales (TfW) said "positive progress" meant the works would continue for a further four years.

Additional works to eastbound carriageway

TfW said the delays were due to the need for additional work to the bridge's eastbound carriageway, which it said couldn't have reasonably been foreseen until works began.

As well as replacing all the expansion joints and waterproofing, crews will also replace steelwork cables on this section of the bridge.

TfW said it appreciated the project would cause continued disruption for road users, but insisted it was an essential investment in the local infrastructure.

It said it had developed a contingency plan, which would see work taking place on the westbound carriageway between April and September each year, while vital surfacing work took place on the eastbound carriageway outside of these months.

TfW said it would help avoid any bridge closures during the peak summer holiday season

Impact on commuters

Local resident Gwenno Hughes said the news of the delays was "disappointing" but she could see why the work was necessary.

"The work is taking so long, but at least this bridge is getting a much-needed upgrade. I wouldn't want them to take short cuts and do a sub-standard job," she said.

The bridge carries the A477 between Pembrokeshire and Carmarthenshire, and connects Milford Haven with the M4. Motorists using this route are advised to check for updates before setting off.
