Calculator reveals thousands of people are missing out on a benefit worth £9,584 a year
Around 600,000 people are missing out on a disability benefit worth up to £9,584 a year, according to new research.
The Personal Independence Payment (PIP) is a benefit for people with long-term health conditions or disabilities that affect their ability to carry out everyday tasks.
Around 2.9 million people in the UK receive PIP, but research by disability charity Leonard Cheshire suggests that around 600,000 people who are eligible are not claiming it.
The charity is urging people to check if they are eligible for PIP, as it could make a big difference to their financial situation.
PIP is a tax-free benefit that is paid to people aged 16 or over who have a long-term health condition or disability that affects their ability to carry out everyday tasks.
The amount of PIP you get depends on the severity of your condition or disability and how it affects you.
There are two parts to PIP:
- Daily living component: This is for help with everyday tasks, such as getting dressed, eating, and bathing.
- Mobility component: This is for help with getting around, such as walking, using public transport, or driving.
You can get PIP if you have a physical or mental health condition or disability that has lasted, or is expected to last, for at least 12 months.
To be eligible for PIP, you must also have difficulty with one or more of the following:
- Physical functions: This includes things like walking, washing, and dressing.
- Cognitive functions: This includes things like understanding and remembering information, making decisions, and communicating.
- Mental functions: This includes things like anxiety, depression, and hallucinations.
You can check if you are eligible for PIP by using the government's online benefits calculator.
If you are eligible, you can apply for PIP online or by phone.
Leonard Cheshire is urging people to check if they are eligible for PIP, as it could make a big difference to their financial situation.
The charity's research found that people with disabilities are more likely to be living in poverty than people without disabilities.
PIP can help to reduce the financial burden of living with a disability and can make a real difference to people's quality of life.
If you think you might be eligible for PIP, don't delay in checking. You could be entitled to up to £9,584 a year.
