Chelsea 2-0 Man City: Sonia Bompastor's Side Go Top of WSL Table
Fran Kirby and Sam Kerr put daylight between the top two in the Women's Super League as Chelsea eased to victory over Manchester City.
Kirby's clinical finish followed by Kerr's powerful header moved Chelsea two points clear of City at the summit, with Arsenal three points further back in third – though the Gunners have a game in hand over the top two.
After a fairly even opening, Chelsea gradually seized the initiative and took the lead just short of the half-hour mark.
Niamh Charles was the creator, delivering a dangerous cross from the left that Kirby turned home with a perfectly-controlled volley.
City goalkeeper Karima Benameur Taieb got a hand to the ball but could not keep it out.
The visitors began the second half brightly but fell further behind in the 54th minute.
Guro Reiten's corner was flicked towards goal by a glancing header from Millie Bright, allowing Kerr to nod in from close range.
City boss Gareth Taylor had brought on Khadija Shaw at half-time in a bid to change the game and the forward almost pulled a goal back shortly after Kerr's strike.
Lauren James floated a cross to the far post and Shaw connected with a powerful header that goalkeeper Ann-Katrin Berger did well to push away.
James then saw a shot blocked by Bright as City continued to press, but Chelsea held firm to secure a deserved victory and move top of the table.
