Kevin Rudd to Stay on as Australia’s Ambassador to the US, Says Anthony Albanese

Former prime minister to continue in role despite speculation about his future

Albanese says Rudd is doing a ‘great job’ and has ‘a lot to offer’ in the role

Former prime minister Kevin Rudd will remain as Australia’s ambassador to the United States, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has confirmed.

There had been speculation about Rudd’s future in the role, with some suggesting he may step down after the change of government.

However, Albanese said on Tuesday that Rudd was doing a “great job” and had “a lot to offer” in the role.

“Kevin Rudd is a great asset to Australia in this role,” Albanese said.

“He has a wealth of experience in foreign affairs and is highly respected in the United States.

He is doing a great job representing Australia and I am confident he will continue to do so.”

Rudd was appointed to the role by former prime minister Scott Morrison in 2021.

He is a former leader of the Labor Party and served as prime minister from 2007 to 2010.

Rudd has a long history of involvement in foreign affairs.

He was foreign minister from 2007 to 2010 and also served as minister for foreign affairs and trade from 2010 to 2012.

He is a graduate of the Australian National University and the University of Oxford.

Rudd is married to Therese Rein and they have two children.
