Colchester United continue their winless run at home as Bradford City take the points

Colchester United 0-1 Bradford City

Colchester United's hopes of a late surge for a play-off place were dented as they suffered a narrow defeat at home to Bradford City.

Bradford started the game brightly and took the lead in the 21st minute when Alex Gilliead fired home from close range.

Colchester improved after the break but could not find a way past a resolute Bradford defense.

The U's remain in 11th place in the League Two table, five points off the play-off places, while Bradford move up to 17th.

Match action

Bradford started the game strongly and took the lead in the 21st minute when Alex Gilliead fired home from close range after good work from Harry Chapman.

Colchester improved after the break and had a number of chances to equalize but could not find a way past a resolute Bradford defense.

The U's best chance fell to substitute Frank Nouble in the 89th minute, but his header was well saved by Bradford goalkeeper Richard O'Donnell.

Reaction

Colchester United manager Matt Bloomfield was disappointed with the result but praised his players for their effort.

"We didn't play well enough in the first half, but we improved after the break and had some good chances to equalize," he said.

"Bradford defended well and we couldn't find a way through."

Bradford City manager Mark Hughes was delighted with the win.

"It was a good performance from us," he said.

"We started the game well and took the lead, and then we defended resolutely in the second half."

"I'm pleased with the three points and the clean sheet."
