The couple, identified as 65-year-old John and 63-year-old Mary Smith, were sailing their 40-foot catamaran when they noticed the divers waving for help. John immediately maneuvered their boat towards the divers and threw them a life ring.
Mary then helped the divers climb aboard their catamaran, where they were provided with warm blankets and dry clothes. The divers, who were all from different parts of the world, expressed their gratitude to the Smiths for saving their lives.
Divers Express Gratitude
"We were so scared and exhausted," said one of the divers, a 25-year-old woman from Germany. "We had been clinging to that buoy for hours, and we didn't know if anyone would find us."
Another diver, a 30-year-old man from Australia, said, "The Smiths are true heroes. They saved our lives, and we will never forget what they did for us."
Coast Guard Acknowledges Heroism
The United States Coast Guard acknowledged the heroism of the Smiths in a statement released on Monday. "The Smiths' actions are a testament to the importance of being prepared and willing to help others in need," said Captain Jason Neubauer, commander of the Coast Guard's 14th District.
The Smiths said they were just glad they could help the divers. "We're just happy that we were in the right place at the right time," said Mary. "We're just glad that everyone is safe."
