Scotland try record equalled as standout fringe player puts hand up to start against Australia
Grant Gilchrist says Glasgow's Sione Tuipulotu is a 'real option' to make his first Six Nations start against Australia
Glasgow Warriors forward Sione Tuipulotu has put his hand up for a Scotland start against Australia next weekend after equalling the club try-scoring record in the United Rugby Championship (URC) on Saturday.
The 25-year-old scored his 41st try for the club against Connacht, matching the tally of former Scotland and Lions winger Thom Evans.
Tuipulotu has been in impressive form for Glasgow this season, scoring 10 tries in 16 appearances.
Fringe player puts hand up to start against Australia
Tuipulotu's impressive form has led to calls for him to be given a chance to start for Scotland in the Six Nations. He has won two caps for his country, but both appearances have come from the bench.
Scotland head coach Gregor Townsend is likely to make changes to his team for the match against Australia after a disappointing defeat to Wales in their opening match of the Six Nations.
Tuipulotu is one of a number of players who could come into contention for a starting berth. He is a versatile forward who can play at lock or in the back row.
Standout fringe player
Tuipulotu's performance against Connacht was another example of his ability to score tries. He took his tally for the season to 10, which is more than any other Scottish player in the URC.
The 25-year-old is a powerful runner with a good eye for the try line. He is also a solid defender and has a good work rate.
Tuipulotu is a real option to start for Scotland against Australia. He is in good form and has the skills and experience to make an impact at international level.
