UNICEF Calls for Urgent Action on World Prematurity Day to Save Lives of Newborns
Premature babies are the vulnerable group that needs special attention
Premature babies are born before 37 weeks of gestation and are at an increased risk of developing health problems, including respiratory distress syndrome, jaundice, and cerebral palsy. For this reason, the problem of reducing the mortality of premature babies is more and more acute. World Prematurity Day, November 17, is a time for us to come together and raise awareness of the challenges faced by premature babies and their families. It is also a time to celebrate the many amazing things that can be done to help these vulnerable newborns.
Urgent action is needed to save the lives of premature babies
Every year, an estimated 15 million babies are born prematurely, and more than 1 million of them die before their first birthday. The vast majority of these deaths occur in developing countries, where access to quality healthcare is limited. UNICEF is calling for urgent action to save the lives of premature babies. The organization is working with governments, healthcare providers, and communities around the world to implement proven interventions that can help to reduce the number of premature births and improve the survival rates of those who are born prematurely.
What can be done to help premature babies?
There are many things that can be done to help premature babies, including:
- Providing access to quality prenatal care can help to reduce the risk of premature birth.
- Ensuring that all babies have access to essential newborn care, such as warmth, nutrition, and oxygen, can help to improve their survival rates.
- Investing in research into the causes and prevention of premature birth can help to save the lives of even more babies in the future.
November 17 is World Prematurity Day
On November 17, we come together to raise awareness of the challenges faced by premature babies and their families. This day is also a time to celebrate the many amazing things that can be done to help these vulnerable newborns. Together, we can make a difference in the lives of premature babies and their families.
