Springbok coach Jacques Nienaber has explained the thinking behind his decision to start Damian Willemse at flyhalf for the Test match against England at Twickenham on Saturday.

The 23-year-old will make his first start at No 10 in the green and gold, having previously played at fullback and wing for the Boks.

Nienaber said Willemse's versatility was a key factor in his selection, as he can also cover fullback and wing if needed.

"Damian is a very versatile player who can play multiple positions in the backline," said Nienaber.

"He's a good decision-maker and has a good kicking game, so he gives us a lot of options in attack."

Nienaber also praised Willemse's defence, saying he is a physical player who is not afraid to make tackles.

"He's a good defender and he's not afraid to put his body on the line," said Nienaber.

"He's a tough player and he's not afraid to compete."

Willemse will be partnered by Elton Jantjies at flyhalf, with Jantjies moving to inside centre.

Nienaber said the combination of Willemse and Jantjies will give the Boks a good balance in attack.

"Elton is a very experienced player who can control the game well," said Nienaber.

"Damian is a more attacking player who can create something out of nothing."

"I think the two of them will complement each other well."

The Boks will be looking to bounce back from their defeat to Ireland last weekend when they face England at Twickenham.

Nienaber said he is confident that the Boks can get the win if they play to their potential.

"We know that England are a very good team, but we're confident that we can beat them if we play to our potential," said Nienaber.

"We've prepared well for this game and we're ready to give it our all."
