Wales edge out Australia to claim Gatland’s first win since returning as coach
Warren Gatland’s second coming as Wales coach got off to a winning start as his side edged out Australia 33-28 in an entertaining clash in Cardiff
Gatland, who had previously coached Wales between 2008 and 2019, saw his team come from behind to secure victory in the Principality Stadium.
The Wallabies had taken an early lead through a try from Jordan Petaia, but Wales hit back with tries from Liam Williams and Keiran Hardy to lead 14-10 at the break.
Australia regained the lead in the second half with a try from Hunter Paisami, but Wales responded immediately through Taulupe Faletau.
The Wallabies then took the lead again with a penalty from Noah Lolesio, but Wales had the final say with a try from Josh Adams.
Gatland was pleased with his team’s performance, particularly their ability to come from behind.
"I'm really proud of the boys," he said. "We showed a lot of character to come from behind and win the game."
"It was a tough game, but we stuck at it and got the result in the end."
Wales will now turn their attention to the Six Nations Championship, which begins on February 4.
