Aftermath of devastating fire in Abergavenny with homes evacuated - LIVE
Fire crews have been tackling a large fire at a former hotel in the centre of Abergavenny, with homes evacuated
The fire broke out at the former Clarence Hotel on Cross Street at around 4.30pm on Thursday, May 11.
The fire service said it sent 10 appliances to the scene, and that crews were using water jets to tackle the flames.
A number of homes were evacuated as a precaution, and residents were advised to keep their windows and doors closed.
The fire service said the cause of the fire was not yet known, and that an investigation would be carried out.
There were no reports of any injuries.
The fire was eventually brought under control at around 10pm, and the fire service said that crews would remain on the scene throughout the night to damp down any remaining hotspots.
The Clarence Hotel was a popular landmark in Abergavenny, and its destruction has come as a shock to the local community.
The hotel was built in the 18th century, and was once one of the finest hotels in Wales.
It had been converted into flats in recent years, and was home to a number of businesses, including a restaurant and a bar.
The fire has caused extensive damage to the building, and it is not clear if it will be possible to repair it.
The fire is a reminder of the importance of fire safety, and the fire service is urging people to take steps to protect their homes and businesses from fire.
Here are some tips from the fire service on how to stay safe from fire:
- Make sure you have a working smoke alarm on every level of your home.

- Have a fire escape plan and practice it with your family.

- Never leave candles unattended.
- Be careful when using electrical appliances.
