'I went with my instincts' - Kelleher after penalty save
Caoimhin Kelleher insists he followed his instincts when saving a penalty from Erling Haaland in the Community Shield.
The Republic of Ireland goalkeeper kept out a second-half spot-kick from the Manchester City striker to help Liverpool win the traditional curtain-raiser on penalties following a 1-1 draw.
Kelleher guessed correctly, diving to his left to deny Haaland, who had seen his penalty saved by Ederson in the FA Cup semi-final in April.
"I went with my instincts, my gut feeling," Kelleher said. "I'd seen him before against Ederson in the FA Cup semi-final so that was in the back of my mind.
"He has that stature and presence, so I went that way and thankfully it came off."
Kelleher has established himself as Liverpool's number two goalkeeper behind Alisson Becker and is determined to keep pushing the Brazil international.
"I'm always trying to learn from him every day in training," Kelleher said.
"He's one of the best in the world, if not the best, so it's always great to train with him and learn from him. I'm always trying to improve and trying to push him as much as I can. We have a great relationship and we push each other every day."
Kelleher's penalty save was one of the highlights of a memorable Community Shield for the Irishman.
He also made a string of fine saves during the game, including one to deny Haaland in the first half.
Kelleher's performance was all the more impressive given that he had only played 45 minutes of pre-season football before the game.
"It was a great feeling to be back out there," Kelleher said.
"It's been a long pre-season but it's been a good one. I've been working hard and I'm feeling good. I'm just delighted to be back out there and playing again."
Kelleher's performance has given Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp a selection headache ahead of the start of the new season.
Klopp has a decision to make over whether to stick with Kelleher for the Premier League opener against Fulham on Saturday or recall Alisson.
Kelleher is hoping to have done enough to earn a starting berth.
"That's up to the manager," Kelleher said.
"I'll just keep working hard and see what happens. I'm always ready to play.
