It Sure Seems Like Mazda Might Actually Build the Iconic SP Concept
Mazda Vision Coupe enters production form as the Mazda SP
The design-led Mazda SP has been spotted testing in heavy camouflage, believed to be the production version of the stunning Vision Coupe Concept that broke cover at the 2017 Tokyo Motor Show.
In March 2022 Mazda officially discontinued the 6 and the CX-3 in Japan. With the demise of these two models, the Hiroshima carmaker has sent out a notice informing Japanese dealers of the imminent arrival of a new product called "SP."
Mazda SP spotted testing in Japan
The speculative Mazda SP is an abbreviation of "Straight Path" and is expected to replace the discontinued 6 and is the compact sedan version of the 3.
It is expected to feature the same turbocharged 2.5-liter 4-cylinder unit from the CX-5, which produces 227 horsepower and 310 lb-ft of torque.
The inline-six engine, codenamed R01 and touted by Mazda to debut by 2022, is expected to displace 3.0-liter and will be available in two power outputs
Automotive News says plans for electrification remain up in the air, but a plug-in hybrid powertrain seems like a possibility given the stricter regulations in major markets like California.
With Mazda reportedly set to finally jump on the hybrid bandwagon next year, the new SP sedan will be followed by a crossover model with similar proportions to the CX-5 but with a more stylish appearance.
Pricing could start at around $25,000, slotting the SP in between the Mazda3 and the Mazda6.
The Mazda SP would essentially combine the handling and driving dynamics of the 3 with the style and comfort of the 6.
The SP Concept was powered by a straight-six engine, but Mazda has yet to confirm the powertrain options for the production model.
The interior was sparse and futuristic, with a minimalist design and a focus on driver engagement.
The production SP is expected to retain some of the concept's design cues, but it is likely to be toned down for mass production.
If Mazda does decide to build the SP, it would be a major addition to its lineup and would help it compete with the likes of the Audi A4, BMW 3 Series, and Mercedes-Benz C-Class.
