Pollard or Libbok: Rassie's pivotal poser
Bok coach to ponder tactical tweak for All Blacks blockbuster as Pollard passed fit
Jacques Nienaber has a major selection poser this week after Handre Pollard was passed fit to face the All Blacks in Saturday's Rugby Championship Test in Mbombela.
The Springbok coach must now decide whether to restore Pollard to the starting line-up at flyhalf or stick with Damian Willemse, who impressed in the No 10 jersey in the 26-10 victory over the Wallabies in Sydney on Saturday.
Pollard, who missed the Wallabies Test due to a calf injury, has been South Africa's first-choice flyhalf for the past five years, but Willemse has shown he is more than capable of filling the role.
Pollard's experience could be crucial
Pollard's experience could be crucial against the All Blacks, who are the world champions and have a wealth of talent in their ranks.
The 29-year-old has played in 66 Tests for South Africa and has a wealth of experience in big matches.
He is also a proven goal-kicker and his ability to put points on the board could be vital against the All Blacks, who have one of the best defences in the world.
Willemse's form has been excellent
However, Willemse has been in excellent form for the Stormers in Super Rugby this season and he has carried that form into the Rugby Championship.
The 24-year-old has a good all-round game and he is a dangerous runner with the ball in hand.
He also has a good kicking game and he is a reliable goal-kicker.
Nienaber has a tough decision to make
Nienaber has a tough decision to make, but he will ultimately have to go with the player he believes gives South Africa the best chance of winning.
If he chooses Pollard, he will have a more experienced player in the No 10 jersey, but he will also have a player who is not as mobile as Willemse.
If he chooses Willemse, he will have a more mobile player at flyhalf, but he will also have a player who is less experienced at the international level.
Pollard's injury could be a blessing in disguise
Pollard's injury could turn out to be a blessing in disguise for the Springboks.
It has given Willemse a chance to show what he can do at the international level and it has also given Nienaber a chance to see what his options are at flyhalf.
South Africa have a number of talented flyhalves and Nienaber will be spoilt for choice when it comes to selecting his team for the Rugby World Cup in France next year.
