Christmas Lights On in Toon!
Christmas lights have been switched on in Newcastle, officially marking the start of the festive season in the city.
Tens of thousands of people braved the cold weather and rain to watch the switch-on ceremony, which took place in Newcastle city centre on Thursday, November 17.
The ceremony was hosted by Metro Radio presenter Lisa Shaw and featured performances from local school children, singers and dancers.
The Lord Mayor of Newcastle, Councillor Habib Rahman, officially switched on the lights at 6pm.
Speaking at the ceremony, he said: “This is a very special moment for Newcastle. The Christmas lights are a symbol of hope and happiness, and they remind us that even in the darkest of times, there is always light.
“I would like to thank everyone who has worked so hard to make this event possible. I hope that everyone enjoys the festive season in Newcastle.”
The Christmas lights in Newcastle will be on display until January 2, 2023.
