Ireland weather: Met Eireann forecasts 'significant' snow and ice event with five counties on alert
Status Orange weather warning issued for five counties, with snow and ice expected to cause travel disruption
Ireland is braced for a 'significant' snow and ice event over the coming days, with five counties placed on Status Orange weather warnings by Met Eireann.
The national forecaster has issued the warnings for Cavan, Monaghan, Donegal, Leitrim and Sligo, with the alert valid from 3pm on Sunday until 12pm on Monday.
Met Eireann warns that "significant snow accumulations are expected" in these areas, with "hazardous conditions" likely. It also warns of "significant ice and frost" and that travel disruption is "likely".
The forecaster has advised the public to exercise caution and to avoid unnecessary travel in affected areas.
The snow and ice is expected to be caused by a cold front moving in from the Atlantic, which will bring "significant falls of snow" to the northwest and north of the country.
The rest of the country is likely to see a mix of rain, sleet and snow, with some snow accumulations possible in parts of the east and south.
The cold weather is expected to continue into the early part of next week, with further snow and ice possible.
Met Eireann has advised the public to keep up-to-date with the latest weather forecasts and warnings, and to take necessary precautions.
Here are some tips to stay safe in the snow and ice:
- Avoid unnecessary travel.
- If you must travel, check the latest weather forecast and road conditions before you set out.
- If you are driving, make sure your vehicle is in good condition and that you have winter tires fitted.
- Drive slowly and carefully, and be aware of other vehicles and pedestrians.
- Be aware of the dangers of black ice, which can be difficult to see.
- If you are walking, wear sturdy shoes with good grip and be careful of slippery surfaces.
- If you are elderly or have mobility issues, stay indoors if possible.
